I Hate Being Told No - Kitchen Reno Pt. 2 Update

If you've been following along on my Instagram stories, you’ll know that I was planning on installing this super cute, white sink that looked so damn good with my new kitchen faucet. But, after delivery and inspection by the maintenance team at my apartment, I was told me that the sink was was too big and they could not complete the installation. Because the new sink was deeper (by 2”), they would have to cut down the existing p-trap and install new parts in order to install the new sink and while they could do the work, I was informed that this could put them in violation of the Fair Housing Act and so a decision was made that I couldn’t have the sink of my dreams. My heart was crushed and I cried about it, but in the end I understand their point of view and decided to make the best of the situation.

My next steps included scouring the internet to find 25” x 22”, 4-hole, 7” deep, aluminum sink in White. Unfortunately, my searches only yielded $900+ custom sinks and I refuse to invest that much money into an apartment sink that I won’t be taking with me when I leave (this was a part of the agreement I made with my landlord at the start). So, I reached out to the most glorious human ever, Heidi and she offered to take me to Home Depot so I can return the white sink and get a new one. On a particularly rainy Thursday, we piled into her Mini Cooper and went over to Home Depot in NE DC.

I decided that I was going to become the queen of mixed metals (S/o to Caitlin) and ended up going with the basic stainless steel sink that everyone has in their apartments. The following day, my landlord dispatched my favorite maintenance man (not providing his name b/c privacy, but he’s my fav), to install the new sink & he was fabulous. He allowed me to film every step and even allowed Sal to supervise.

Although, I truly believe that the white sink/dark faucet combo would have looks 10x better, I’m really happy with the outcome and love that I was able to make this upgrade. I’ll check back in a few weeks when my new pulls & accessories arrive. In the meantime, watch the faucet reveal on TikTok.

p.s. A word of advice, if you are looking to make upgrades in your apartment, be ready to compromise with you landlord.

Over here washing dishes,

Imani
