How I Got Featured On Apartment Therapy + My Tips!

Photos by TRUTHIS Studios

Like many people, I started reading Apartment Therapy when I was in high school. I was obsessed with the home tours, the before & after pics, and would dream of the day I could see my own space on the site. Welp! It finally happened! That's right; my 490-square foot studio apartment is live on Apartment Therapy right now! This dream is shared by so many, so I thought I would share a few tips that helped me get noticed by the editors.

Write Something Interesting

Resist the urge to write basic advice about loving your space - instead, dig deep for interesting stories & unique tips for other renters. For example, when asked about my “biggest challenge,” I said, “I have an impulse control issue. My bank account is begging me to stop going to the flea market. I’m not going to stop, but I want to immortalize my bad spending habits in print.” See that’s funny, exciting, and relatable!

Also, be sure to proofread your answers! Run it by a friend or use Grammarly.

Take Good Photos

Apartment Therapy requires five photos, but you can add up to eight, and the good news is... they don't have to be professional pics. i.e., iPhone photos are okay! If you struggle with taking great photos, check out this article or this video!

I submitted my apartment using the pics below, and I tried to showcase the most exciting areas in my apartment + a few detailed shots.

Read Apartment Therapy

It seems obvious, but make sure to read the latest tours & articles! See what trends they’ve been sharing & make a note of the different editors. When I wrote my submission, I looked at a few tours to see how long my answers should be and for ideas about decorating my vignettes, which was incredibly helpful! The one thing you should not do is compare your apartment to others on the site. Instead, get your inspiration and go; judging your space will only make you feel bad & we don’t have time for that!

Be Patient

Every renter in the world wants to be on Apartment Therapy, and I’m sure they have hundreds of submissions to get through, so be patient! I waited a few weeks to hear back from an editor, but some people wait longer. If it’s been a few months (more than six) & you haven’t heard back, try resubmitting with new photos or better answers to the prompts.
