Homie Hot List - September ‘24

Welcome to the Homie Hot List - a round-up of the most clicked, shopped, and requested links of September ‘24

September was shaping up to be an incredible month for me. I started building my living room entertainment center, attended the opening of the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center, and started packing for my trip to Copenhagen and Sweden with IKEA…

Everything was coming up roses (word to Audra McDonald)

Then I got the call that my dad passed away.

It was odd. One second, I was waiting for the bus. The next... my dad was dead.

I tend to keep the deeper parts of my personal life off the feed, but as the contents of my DMs have proven, grieving the loss of a parent is an all-too-familiar experience that I share with many Homies.

I truly appreciate how I was welcomed into the #DeadDadClub. The stories and jokes have brightened many of my days and in a way knowing I’m not alone has made this loss easier to accept.

The weeks after someone dies are complex, but at least you have a purpose… i.e., to plan a funeral that will honor and celebrate the deceased life… But my dad was Muslim, and those ceremonies are intentionally simple and took all four hours to organize, so I've had a lot of time on my hands to grieve, laugh, think, and reflect…

I haven't cried much, which is weird for me, but I think it will come soon.

Maybe?

I loved my dad. His unwavering commitment to being 100% himself is the reason I live my life the way I do without apologies. However, we had a very complicated relationship, and I'm still working out these feelings.

If I've learned anything from my dad, it's how to enjoy life even when everything is going up in flames… So, that's what I'm doing. I'm sending this from a transatlantic flight to Copenhagen, and I'm slowly, but surely, getting back to work… I hope that's alright with you, Homie!

Here is this Homie Hot List for September 2024.
