Buying Guide: Essential Painting Supplies

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Painting is the #1 way to upgrade a space when you’re low on cash! A $20 quart can totally transform a space1, especially when you’re dealing with tiny apartment kitchens. That said, if you want to spend some real $$$$ of paint, check out my favorite Fall paint color Pimlico Green by Fenwick & Tillbrook - it costs an astonishing $142 for 1.5 gallons! Expensive paint aside, the biggest reason I love painting is that the supplies you need is simple to get & easily available. I asked my #athomies on Instagram if a roundup of my painting supplies would be helpful and received a resounding “YES!”. So here is my list of must have painting supplies that I like to keep in my kit!

11 Essentials For Your Next DIY Paint Project

Handy Paint Cup | $10

As a person with tiny hands & terrible coordination, holding a brush with in hand and a heavy can in the other is difficult & time-consuming. I suffered until, I found Handy Products and the Handy Paint Cup. The cup has a handle on the back to make is easy to hold in your hand or hook on to a ladder + there is a magnet in the back to keep the brush in place. The cup or pail (Handy offers two sizes) is easy to clean & can double as a hold all for your brushes in between jobs.

Frog Tape | $10

If you’ve got textured walls like me then Frog Tape should be your go to for all things DIY. The adhesive is strong enough to stay in place, but won’t damage your walls and it does a decent job of getting into the grooves to ensure a straight line. I keep this on hand at all times!

Adjustable Extension Pole | $7-$20

I need help reaching the ceiling in my apartment & this extension pole gives me the few extra inches that I need to reach the top of my ceiling.

Valspar 4-inch Foam Roller | $6

This roller allows me to get a smooth, spray like finish when painting my cabinets and doors, without the hassle that comes with spray painting.

Kilz 2 Primer | $18

This is my favorite primer PERIOD. The Kilz 2 All Purpose Primer is perfect because it works well on Ikea DIY & covers up Black paint very well! I love this stuff & always keep a can on deck.

Valspar Mini Angled Brush | $10

This brush helps me get all of those tight corners and create neat and sharp lines when painting. 100% recommend!

Drop Cloth | $15-$60

Don’t be cheap & buy plastic drop cloths. If you’re like me & you love doing DIY Projects, it makes a lot of sense to spend $20-$30 once, rather than $5-$15 every time you do a new project. In addition to painting, I use this cloth to protect my rugs while repotting plants or drilling holes into the wall to hang pictures. The canvas drop cloth is it!

Paint Pyramid Risers | $7

These are so helpful in making sure that whatever I’m painting does stick to the floor or table that I’m painting above.
