My Custom Upholstered Bed Frame Cost Under $1500 Thanks To The Inside

Even though my studio apartment had an incredible layout, not having a proper bedroom for four years was frustrating, and was a major reason I wanted to move into a bigger apartment. Thankfully, I’ve made the transition and am finally ready to get started on my primary bedroom makeover.

To date, I have maximized the storage in the closet and upgraded to a queen-sized bed (for the first time in my life), but the most important upgrade I've done to this space is getting a new bed frame.

I connected with The Inside by Havenly months ago to learn about their selection of made-to-order upholstered bed frames. Here's how I went from the mattress on the floor to sitting pretty in my beautiful new bedframe.

The Inside offers 13 frame styles. My favorites include the Art Deco bed, the Classic Wingback, and the Arched Back bed, but in the end, I went with the Camelback style since it was the perfect combination of traditional and modern.

Next, it was time to select a fabric. The Inside offers 90+ fabric choices, depending on the bed style, so this was the most challenging part of the process. I looked over their website for weeks before ordering swatches of fabrics I liked the most. At $1/each, this was a nominal fee to ensure I picked the right bed.

Even if you’re set on a specific pattern, always order a swatch to take with you on shopping trips.

For my bed, I went with Sand Odalisque, a painterly geometric inspired by the Ikat tradition, for a few reasons.

The Durability

Sand Odelisque is a 100% cotton fabric and rates at 15,000 double rubs. A double rub is a durability test where two stands of material are vigorously rubbed together until the strands break. This is done to mimic the experience of wear and tear to determine the best application for specific fabrics.

Simply put, the higher the number, the stronger the fabric and the more comfortable you should feel allowing your kids and pets on it.

The Disappearing Act

This fabric plays tricks on the eye. From afar, the cream and white almost combine to create this soft and lineny look, but up close the geometric shapes really pops! This chameleon effect, adds dimension and interest to an otherwise simple frame. Plus, because each bed is made-to-order, there will be a slight variation from order to order, making mine truly one-of-a-kind.

The Inside makes every bed to order, so lead times are around 3-4 weeks, but I love that their sustainable business model doesn't lead to overproduction.

The installation process was straightforward, taking about an hour to assemble, and the base is sturdy enough for two kids to jump on - ask me how I know!

My frame requires a box spring, which I prefer since it prolongs the life of your mattress and helps avoid that “I’m sleeping on the floor” feeling that comes when you have a platform bed. The only downside is that the frame sits very low to the ground -under 6” - thus I cannot use my under-bed drawers for storage, but I think I’ve found a workaround for this little problem.

This frame was kindly gifted by the brand, but I find their bed frame pricing to be very affordable for upholstered bedding. The queen-sized Camelback bed + my fabric choice came to under $1200, which is a fantastic price.

I get a lot of questions on where to start when designing a room, and my advice is, as always, to begin with the biggest and more important piece. Sometimes that is a rug you got on sale, a sofa you love, or a sentimental piece of art, but it’s usually the bed frame in a bedroom makeover. So, as I start down the path of my bedroom makeover, I’m excited to create something worthy of my custom bedframe from The Inside.
