22 Essentials Tools For Beginner DIYers

THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS

After many years of doing DIY projects, both big and small, I've amassed a collection of tools and supplies that I can pick from when it's time to start the next project. You might think this collection keeps me out of my local hardware store, but you would be wrong.

Because there is no greater way to spend an afternoon than wandering the aisles of Home Depot, Ace Hardware, or Lowe's for the right drill bit, anchor, or whatever.

That said, there is a certain amount of anxiety that comes when you're starting a new project but are unsure of what tools you need. Is an electric screwdriver better than an impact driver? What anchors do I need to hang a 60-lb. mirror on plaster walls? Do I really need a ladder? And if so, where should you store it when it's not in use?

These questions have passed through my mind many times, and even after four years, they still do. So, I create this list of essential tools and supplies for the beginner to intermediate DIYer.

22 Essential DIY Tools

I love my impact driver, it’s perfect for assembling IKEA cabinets, hanging art, and installing curtain rods.

This kit is a must. It comes with a ton of drill bits and works on wood, metal and plastic.

Stop standing on your dresser to hang curtains - it’s dangerous. Get a step ladder and put it under your bed/behind the couch or in the basement of your apartment when not in use.

A tape measure is your best defense against ordering furniture that’s too small or too big.

For my pre-war apartment lovers a hammer drill is great to have when you need to drive holes into concrete or brick, just make sure you get masonry drill bits.

Assembling IKEA furniture has never been easier.

This is essential when installing wallpaper or leveling kitchen cabinets!

This kit can hang anything from 10-100 lbs. and works on most wall types, including plaster and drywall.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

My favorite anchors!

Stop using a credit card and get this kit!

You can’t properly install wallpaper, cabinetry or hang multiple pieces of art without a laser level! The one has 30-ft. range and simultaneous vertical and horizontal lines.

I’ve never been more in love with a power tool. It can sand corners, cut metal, cut through laminate countertops.

Clamps are so handy when you’re working solo! Use them to hold wood glue in place or to secure wood, so you can cut a straight line!

Always keep these on hand for wallpaper projects and for breaking down boxes! Makes for a quick and easy clean up.

As you’re working your way up to using a table saw, this compact saw is a wonderful step. With a 3/4” cut depth, I’ve used this baby to build shelves and cut laminate countertops.

Safety first! Protect your eyes!

You’ll need these to change a faucet!

The best tape to keep paint lines straight and a big help when installing wallpaper.

Upgrading to a heavy duty sander was essential when I repainted my bedroom nightstands.

A simple and easy to use stud finder.

At 28, I refuse to work on the floor, this table allows me to stand up when I cut trim or paint. A perfect work station.

How To Organize and Store Your Tools

How you keep your tool collection organized will depend on the amount of stuff you have. I dedicated an entire section of my ELFA Office Makeover to keeping my collection tidy. But that might not be what you need, a cute tool bag or metal tool box could be perfect for you!

Larger items like ladders can go in your closet, under the bed, or in the basement of your apartment building. I have a friend who shares a ladder with a neighbor and they send it back and forth whenever it’s needed.

Anything is possible when you’re renting, you just have to think outside the box.

Happy Renting, Homies!
