Splurge or Save! How To Spend Your Money In Your New Apartment

I've spent over $15,000 decorating and DIYing my space, and no matter what the haters say on TikTok, I don't regret it. For starters, investing in your happiness is never a bad idea, but also... I put a lot of thought into every item I purchased, and I know I'll be able to take the more expensive items with me to my next apartment whenever I choose to move.

Knowing when to splurge or when to save can be a tricky balance, especially when you find yourself lusting after a unique lamp, wondering, "Is this really worth $300?" But, don't worry. I've created a fool-proof list to help you out.

Frames don’t have to be expensive! This solid brass frame was $3.

Sofa - Splurge

I've said this before, and I'll say it again… Don't buy that cheap ass couch! Whatever your budget, add $500 and try to find a good deal. When you live in a small space, your sofa doubles as a bed for your guests, and there is nothing worst than sleeping on a lumpy couch.

Coffee Table Books - Save

SOME coffee table books, like these ones, are worth the $30+ price tag, but if you want them just for the aesthetics, head to your local thrift store and check out the selection of books. You'll find unique covers and spend about $3 per book.

Mattress - Splurge

I'm getting the best sleep on a $1500 mattress, and let me tell you… it's worth it. A $500 piece of foam in a bag will not conform to your curves and support your lower back. Don't play yourself! Your thirties are approaching, and good sleep is so important.

Wall Art - Save

Buying original art can get pricy, but there is no reason not to adorn your walls. Find unique frames at the flea market and pop in those family photos you keep tucked in a drawer. Or, if you want to support local artists, check to see if they offer prints. I picked up one by my friend and incredible photographer, Farrah Skeiky, and it looks fantastic on my TV gallery wall

Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper - Splurge

Ok! Hear me out! I know it is tough to remove peel-and-stick wallpaper and use it in another space… But the visual interest created by a patterned wall covering cannot be matched by paint. If you're covering an entire room it can get expensive, but instead of going for cheap wallpapers in basic patterns, try a higher-priced, better-quality one and use it sparingly.

Dining Chairs - Save

I'm convinced these "new" chairs don't have anything on a solid wood beauty from the thrift store. I've purchased both, and there is no comparison. Vintage chairs are superior!

Lighting - Splurge/Save

I'm conflicted about spending money on light fixtures. On the one hand, you can find incredible options from Target and IKEA in the under $100 range. That said, statement light fixtures cost money and are a worthy investment. So splurge on the fixtures in your main living space and dining room, and save on the rest.

p.s. This is just my opinion. Spend your money however you like! 😜
